How Will the Thomas County Coalition's Prevention Initiatives Impact Colby Schools?

COLBY, Kan. - (Thursday, March 13, 2025) – The Thomas County Coalition met for its monthly

meeting on Thursday, March 13, where Prevention Mobilizer Jennifer Thompson provided

updates on two new initiatives aimed at supporting youth in USD #315 Colby Public Schools.

Thompson has partnered with Colby schools to launch a life skills training program for fifth-grade students. The program will begin with a pre-test to assess students' perspectives, allowing Thompson and program evaluators to get a baseline of students’ understanding of the information that will be presented. This initiative aims to equip young students with essential decision-making and problem-solving skills that will serve them well in the years ahead.

In addition to partnering with the Colby Middle School’s student government to coordinate the

program locally, Thompson is also working alongside DCCCA, a nonprofit organization

headquartered in Lawrence who provides social and community services throughout the

region.

Thompson explained the impactful programming will be presented at the middle school in April as part of Alcohol Awareness Month. This initiative will provide students with critical education about the risks and consequences of alcohol use. Recognizing the importance of parental involvement, Thompson has also arranged for a parent-education component, ensuring families receive resources to facilitate open, effective communication about substance use prevention at home.

"Educating our youth about the dangers of alcohol is one of the most effective ways to prevent future substance misuse," said Jennifer Thompson. "Research shows that the earlier a person begins drinking, the more likely they are to develop alcohol dependence later in life.

By equipping students with knowledge and life skills, we empower them to make healthier choices for their future. "While these efforts currently focus on USD #315, Thompson hopes to expand similar initiatives to the public schools in Rexford and Brewster, strengthening prevention education throughout Thomas County. Thompson emphasized the importance of recognizing April as Alcohol Awareness Month and

the impact of local-level prevention programs. She said DCCCA was a natural partner to bring

the program into fruition. "DCCCA’s mission is to provide social and community services that

improve the safety, health, and well-being of all people throughout Kansas," said Thompson.

"We are proud to collaborate with DCCCA to bring prevention education to local schools, and

to educate and inspire conversations about the dangers of drug use and addiction among

youth. Alcohol Awareness Month is a crucial time to raise awareness about alcohol use and

misuse while promoting responsible decision-making."

Drug and alcohol prevention efforts are a core mission of the Thomas County Coalition, aimed

at fostering a healthier community in Thomas County. This mission is achieved by connecting

residents with partner organizations and launching initiatives that promote well-being and

provide easy access to programs and resources, which ultimately empowers individuals to

make healthier decisions. The Thomas County Coalition is led by Coordinator Christina Beringer, and the program operates under the guidance of LiveWell Northwest Kansas, directed by Travis Rickford.

Monthly meetings of the Thomas County Coalition are open to the public and take place at

noon, the second Thursday of the month, at El dos De Oros in Colby.
